South Carolina State University founded in 1896 and located in Beautiful Orangeburg, South Carolina is seeking a motivated and seasoned General Counsel to represent the University. The General Counsel will be responsible for effective and efficient legal representation for the University. The General Counsel will represent the University on all legal affairs and provide legal advice, guidance, and assistance to the University. Representation includes successful defense of claims brought against the University and management of the University's risks of exposure for potential liability.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

The General Counsel will provide legal advice in all aspects of general corporate and employment matters and general student matters. The General Counsel will serve as chief legal advisor to the President on issues related to the University, providing recommendations, advice, and input consistent with best practices, the strategic plan, and the University's mission. Provides legal advice, guidance, and assistance to the University Senior Administrators, and other employees as appropriate.

Prepares and reviews all legal documents related to the business of the University. Provides advice and counsel regarding labor and employment issues and employee relations matters, including performance and disciplinary issues, ensuring lawful employment practices and adherence to EEO/Affirmative Action policies and State Human Resources Regulations. Assists in the administration of employee terminations and any subsequent grievance, administrative appeal, and or litigation.

Oversees all litigation involving South Carolina State University. Attends all trials and hearings for matters involving the University. Attends depositions, witness preparations, and reviews discovery production, as feasible, with outside counsel. Manages outside counsel. Coordinates with the State Insurance Reserve Fund on coverage and case management. Provides supervision and oversight for the Office of Equal Opportunity, which investigates employee complaints, and all allegations of discrimination, including Title IX matters. Assumes responsibility for responding to investigations by state and federal agencies, including the SC Human Affairs Commission, the Equal Employment Office, and the Office of Civil Rights. 

Minimum Requirements for Entry into Position:  

Member of the South Carolina Bar; a Juris Doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school and three (3) years experience as a practicing attorney in the public and/or private sector
