South Carolina State University is seeking an innovative and experienced professional to lead a multimillion-dollar Urban Forestry grant project at SC State University Public Service and Agriculture. The Project Director will facilitate and coordinate the strategic implementation, management (planning, designing, monitoring, evaluating, reporting) of the project. The project director should have deep understanding ability to address the urban forestry needs of socially disadvantaged and underserved communities across the state as required by the project. The ideal candidate must have an extensive record of urban agriculture and field research experience. An essential qualification for this position includes an extensive professional and educational background in agriculture, urban forestry management, climate change remediation practices using forests and forest products, climate effect modeling in forestry. The preferred candidate must be well published in both peer reviewed research papers and/or book chapters in reputable academic and extension journals.

The project director will work closely with local counties, state agencies, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, and community organizations to implement sustainable green infrastructure solutions. The project director will report directly to the Associate Vice President /Director of Strategic Initiatives, Evaluation, and External Affairs. This role is ideal for a leader with a passion for environmental justice, urban forestry, and sustainable community development.

Minimum Requirements for Entry into Position:

Master’s degree in urban forestry, environmental science, natural resources, landscape architecture, or a related field.

Preferred Requirements for Entry into Position:

Doctorate preferred but not required, provided that relevant experience is demonstrated

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as conducting site visits, supervising tree planting, and walking long distances.
  • Must be able to lift-up to 50 pounds and work in various weather conditions.
  • Extensive in-state travel required for project management and stakeholder meetings.
