South Carolina State University is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Defensive Coordinator / Linebackers Coach to lead the defensive unit of its Division I FCS football program, competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). This individual will be responsible for designing and executing a defensive strategy that embodies the proud tradition of Bulldog football. The ideal candidate will also directly coach the linebackers, serving as a key developer of both scheme and player talent, and will play a vital role in the recruitment and retention of high-character student-athletes.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Lead the development, implementation, and execution of the overall defensive philosophy and weekly game plans.
• Serve as play-caller and strategist on game days, making in-game adjustments as needed.
• Directly coach and mentor the linebacker unit, with a strong emphasis on fundamentals, technique, football IQ, and physical development.
• Oversee defensive staff, collaborating with position coaches to ensure cohesive preparation, communication, and execution.
• Break down game film, evaluate opponents, and prepare scouting reports to inform defensive strategy.
• Recruit, evaluate, and sign prospective student-athletes who align with the university’s academic, athletic, and cultural values.
• Support the academic success and personal development of student-athletes, promoting accountability and discipline on and off the field.
• Ensure full compliance with NCAA, MEAC, and institutional rules and regulations.
• Collaborate with support staff (e.g., strength and conditioning, athletic training, academics, compliance) to enhance student-athlete performance and welfare.
• Represent the football program with integrity and pride in the community, on campus, and in the media.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of five (5) years of collegiate football coaching experience, with at least three (3) years on the defensive side of the ball.
• Demonstrated success in coordinating a defensive unit and/or coaching linebackers at the collegiate level.
• Strong working knowledge of NCAA Division I (FCS) rules and regulations.
• Effective leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Preferred:
• Experience as a Defensive Coordinator at the FCS or FBS level.
• Previous coaching and/or recruiting experience in the southeastern region or within HBCUs.
• Master’s degree in a related field.
• Proven ability to build relationships and mentor student-athletes from diverse backgrounds.
Work Expectations:
• Must be available to work extended hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
• Regular travel required for games and recruiting responsibilities.
