The Head Softball Coach is responsible for the recruitment, development, and academic/athletic success of the women’s softball program. This position fosters an environment that prioritizes the student-athlete experience and encourages personal, academic, and athletic growth. Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Head Softball Coach will manage all aspects of the softball program, including coaching, recruiting, budget oversight, and staff supervision.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Instruct and develop student-athletes during practices and games.
  • Conduct team strategy sessions and skill development.
  • Prepare for and compete in NCAA Division I matches and tournaments.
  • Identify and recruit student-athletes who align with academic and athletic goals.
  • Utilize recruiting platforms and manage a database of prospects.
  • Monitor student-athlete academic performance and eligibility.
  • Coordinate team budget, travel logistics, and team scheduling.
  • Ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, and university policies.
  • Supervise assistant and volunteer coaches.
  • Attend department meetings, submit reports, and support overall athletics goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of collegiate coaching experience; NCAA Division I head coaching experience and five or more years of overall coaching experience preferred.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification (or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire).
  • NCAA compliance training (as required).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and team-building skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, recruiting, and compliance.
  • Alignment with the mission and vision of South Carolina State University.

Position Information:

  • Staff Oversight: Assistant coaches and team personnel.
  • Budget Responsibility: Oversight of program budget.
  • Facilities: Campus athletic facilities and partner locations for practices and games.
  • Schedule: Full-time, flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and travel.
  • Travel Requirements: Significant travel for recruiting and competitions.
  • Equipment Provided: Office space, university phone, computer, and team gear.
