The College of Education, Humanities, and Social Sciences is hiring for the position of Academic Dean. The academic Deans are the chief administrative officers of the Colleges at SC State University. The Deans provide leadership in formulating educational policy, including curriculum development and delivery, and serve as their faculty members’ agents in the execution of such policy. College Deans hold faculty rank and engage in the research, and service functions of faculty. In addition to supervising all department chairs within the college, the dean also performs critical activities.
Description of Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide leadership in the planning, direction, and development of the College and its various academic departments; represents the College at formal functions and in public relations efforts such as speaking engagements, outreach activities in the community, discipline-specific advisory committees, and university board of trustees’ maintain operational procedures, rules, and standards relating to faculty and staff classification standards and the standards of accrediting bodies; performance indicators specified by various accrediting bodies and the SC Commission on Higher Education; promotes the College through financial assistance in fund-raising, and/or grant writing, promotes sponsored research and other professional activities of the faculty; supervises and conducts regular meetings with chairpersons in the performance of their duties; provide up-to-date information to and from the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs as appropriate regarding personnel and issues in the College; prepares an annual budget and report for the College; provides administrative leadership to departments within the College in the absences of the chairperson, or designates someone to perform these functions, subject to the approval of the Provost; reviews and takes appropriate action on curricula and semester schedules of the departments within the college; integrates and coordinates the work of an administrative subdivision within the College and articulates the position of the college with that of other academic areas of the University. Also, it resolves conflicts within the College, provides training sessions on new and innovative methods of managing and supervising, ensures an effective management-accountability system within the College; and performs such other duties as are laid out in the Faculty Handbook and those that may be assigned by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the President.
