Description of Duties and Responsibilities 

The successful candidate will be responsible for the processing and timely delivery of assigned payroll duties. The candidate will assist in accurately paying employees in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations. The candidate will exercise independent judgment and discretion in planning and carrying out the details of work procedures and methods.

The candidate will provide guidance to employees and serve as a backup to payroll operations team members. Respond to payroll queries from employees in a timely manner, analyze payroll issues and recommend corrective actions. Help to assure proper tax treatment, accounting, and disposition of withholdings such as taxes, deductions for benefits, charitable contributions, retirement contributions, etc. Assist with the reviewing of payroll functions to ensure accuracy of payment to employees and the distributions of withholding to appropriate vendors/agencies. Ensure authorized deductions are deducted from employee pay and disbursed to the proper company. Coordinate with Human Resources for proper benefit and deduction set-up. Process transactions concerning the assimilation of payroll information, the processing of payroll changes, and the distribution of payroll checks. Assist in payroll and timesheet audit activities. Generate payroll reports and calendars. Assist with preparation and distribution of W-2s and year end reports. Record and maintain employee timesheets and payroll data.

Contribute to the overall success of the Controller’s Office to perform all other duties assigned. Maintain a professional demeanor and high levels of confidentiality. Must provide excellent customer service to internal and external contacts.

Minimum Requirements for Entry into Position

A high school diploma and at least 1 year of payroll-related experience, or a bachelor's degree with multiple accounting courses may be substituted for the required work experience.

Preferred Requirements for Entry into Position

Associate Degree in Business Administration or a high school diploma with 3 or more years of relevant experience. Knowledge of the principles, practices, theories and terminology of accounting, auditing, banking, budgeting, financial management or investment. Knowledge of state government fiscal and accounting processes.
